Comparison and Contrast of The Destructors and The Rocking Horse Winner

Introduction
The Destructors by Graham Greene and The Rocking Horse Winner are the focus of this papera comparison and contrast of their major characters to be specific. The Destructors is a short story about how a gang of young men destroys a house while The Rocking Horse Winner is about a kid who gets the ability to predict the winner of horse races and uses his winnings to try to satisfy his materialistic mother. The characters are similar and different at the same time in many ways a closer look at them would reveal the extent of these similarities and differences.

Trevor and Paul
Trevor is the main protagonist in The Destructors while Paul is the main protagonist in The Rocking Horse Winner. Trevor or simply T is the new leader of the gang known as The Wormsley Common Gang. He is a rather reserved character who does not speak unless he absolutely has too. He never wasted a word even to tell his name until that was required of him by the rules. (Greene) Unlike Paul who is as talkative as any other kid his age is. Paul is the kid in the The Rocking Horse Winner that can correctly pick the winner horse of an upcoming race. Paul would always ask questions to his mother, like the time when Paul inquired to his mother about the concept of luck. Then what is luck mother...And is father not lucky (Lawrence).

Trevors silence is a sign that he is a no non-sense man. He wouldnt speak up until he absolutely has to. Though in the story, he talks a lot than usual, he still keeps much to himself and only talks of the necessary things, like his plans on what to do with Mr. Thomas house.  His silence may also suggest that he is a thinking person, and this is proven by his devious plot of destroying the house of Mr. Thomas. Well pull it down. Well destroy it. (Greene) explained Trevor when he was asked what he wanted to do with the house. Pauls talkative nature tells readers that he is indeed still a kid despite the huge responsibility he has taken upon himself of hauling the family out of poverty.

Paul wants to make his mother happy but more than anything, he wants to make the house shut up because he has apparently hearing voices inside the house that tells him that there must be more money This tells readers that he is a very sympathetic person and is willing to help his family despite his young age. Trevor meanwhile is a cold-hearted gangster. His silence partly gives this cold-heartedness away. He does not have a care in the world if what he and his gang are doing is downright wrong. Destroying the house is bad enough but destroying a house of a person who tried to be nice to you, as Mr. Thomas did, and a person who is old and alone, is just despicable. Only people without emotions are capable of doing such things. Trevor is definitely one of those people.

Conclusion
Trevor and Paul are quite different characters from different short stories just as their intentions differ. Trevor is quiet while Paul is talkative. Ironically, Trevor, the quiet one among the two protagonists is the one who have bad intentions. Paul despite his endless inquiries has a noble cause of saving the family out of poverty.
